TWO PARADIGMS.
ONE ORGANISATION.

Both workflows below operate on the same case, the same stakeholders and the same evidence. Nothing is duplicated and nothing is invented for one lens that the other cannot see. The point of the Lab is what happens next: the same situation produces different questions, different insights and different interventions depending on the paradigm you enter it with.

The shared case

THE TRANSFORMATION THAT STALLED

Fourteen months in, a £48m operating-model and platform transformation has delivered its technology but not its outcomes. Go-live happened. Adoption did not.

Northwind consolidated eleven regional operating models into one national service model, supported by a new field-service platform. The platform is live in 31 of 34 depots. Scheduling accuracy has improved on paper, but first-time-fix has fallen, overtime is up, two regional directors have quietly reinstated the old paper dispatch process, and the programme steering committee has begun cancelling its own meetings.

DIAGNOSTIC OD

Expert-led organisational diagnosis

Core philosophy
Organisations are systems whose problems can be systematically assessed. Expert analysis of triangulated evidence reveals root causes and interdependencies.
Best used when
Problems are relatively well-defined, expert analysis adds insight beyond internal understanding, measurable outcomes matter and timeframes are constrained.
Practitioner role
Diagnostician and intervention designer
Typical methods
Surveys · interviews · focus groups · observation · document review · performance data · 7-S, Burke-Litwin, Weisbord
Primary output
A systemic diagnosis with confidence-labelled root-cause hypotheses and a designed intervention portfolio

DIALOGIC OD

Co-creation, dialogue & emergent change

Core philosophy
Organisations are ongoing conversations. Reality is multiple and socially constructed; change emerges through generative dialogue rather than expert prescription.
Best used when
Challenges are ambiguous and adaptive, multiple realities must be honoured, ownership and organisational capacity matter as much as the answer.
Practitioner role
Facilitator, convener and process designer
Typical methods
Appreciative Inquiry · World Café · Open Space Technology · Future Search · generative questioning
Primary output
Multiple emerging futures, productive differences made visible, and small credited experiments

Comparison

COMPARE THE TWO APPROACHES

The same organisational situation under both lenses, facet by facet: view of reality, role of the practitioner, use of data, change mechanism, success criteria, risks and best fit — plus what each lens found on this case and what each lens could not see.

Synthesis

CREATE HYBRID OD APPROACH

Sequence the paradigms instead of choosing between them: diagnostic foundation → dialogic engagement → experimentation → action research → systematic implementation → continuous learning, with an explicit reason for each paradigm at each stage.
